The Joy of Instant Connection

Most evenings just after 6 pm, I take a moment to enjoy the sunset and the vibrant energy of Waikiki. I believe it’s so special because of the fact that the sunset is never the same, each one offering its own unique beauty.

Today, on my way home, I saw a young man with an electric scooter. I smiled, and he smiled back. Curious, I asked how fast it goes, and he told me 15 mph. Thinking he might be Japanese, I asked, and he confirmed, “Yes.”

Just then, the elevator doors opened, we stepped inside and so did about 3 others. As we continued our conversation, I introduced myself, “I’m Bodhi.” He replied, “I’m Shota.” A man next to me then asked, “Bodhisattva!?” I smiled and said, “Yes.” Then, I asked, “Does that word mean anything to you?” He laughed and replied, “Yes, it’s only the best movie of all time… Point Break!”

In that brief moment, we shared a connection, and it felt like a small but powerful reminder of how the simplest interactions—born out of a smile, a question, and a spark of curiosity—can leave us with a sense of fullness and shared understanding.

This happens several times every day, and I love it.  Aloha
